If you're having a problem with your LOGIC BOARD failling, please see this post on Macosxhints.com. We've got an ongoing discussion about symptoms, problems and possible solutions. We're hoping that the more people that get in there and complain and say something, Apple is going to eventually perk up and pay attention cause as of right now they're denying any widespread problem with the G3/G4 logic boards outside of an "unofficial" suggestion to shim a chip on the board that "should" solve the problem.
I personally bought my G4 in August of 2005 and it worked fine...until it went out of warranty. It started with my Airport card starting kernel panics around September of this year. I couldn't turn on my Airport card without getting a grey screen telling me in 5 different languages I needed to restart my computer. Then it got worse...now if I power down my computer, it will chime, but nothing else happens minus the occasional high fan. Please, please, PLEASE if you have an iBook and you're having a problem take the moment to register for the forum and let us know what's going on. We're going to keep linking this to Apple and calling in and complaining until they do something. I myself have been to the Genius Bar 6 times and each time they've denied a widespread problem.
If this is as big as it seems to be right now, and if this is truly a hardware error on Apple's part, we shouldn't have to pay in order to have a working computer because from what it seems, even replacing the logic board doesn't fix the problem too well.
I'm actually disappointed in Mac. This is my first Apple computer, but everyone else I know with a Mac hasn't had nearly as many problems as I've had with my G4 so I'm going to chalk it up to choosing the wrong computer to buy. My cousin's had his Mac for almost 4 years and only upgraded because it was time. I've got friends with 3 and 4 Macs and haven't had any problems (unless they have an iBook) Come on Apple...get it together. :(
...I still won't go back to Windows though. :P
